Having served on dozens of Nonprofit Board of Directors and having ‘coached’ dozens of others, associates on the Clemons-Associates team suggests an exercise to engage these valued stakeholders/community leaders/volunteers with a series of short questions.

Good Idea:

· Spend the first 10 minutes of your next board meeting with meaningful dialogue by addressing one or more of the following questions · Take a few moments at subsequent meetings to follow up on any unresolved issues · This practice will prompt everyone in the boardroom to shift their attention to what matters

1. What are the key measures indicating our success?

2. Do you feel our activities (agenda) are correctly advancing the mission of the charity?

3. What are the top 1 or 2 limiting factors for meeting our mission?

4. What is the most significant threat to our operation?

5. How well are we meeting our financial obligations?

6. Is organization’s talent adequately staffed to accomplish objectives?

7. Is organization’s staff adequately compensated?

8. Who are our stakeholders? (List by category -or by name)

9. Who are our ‘competitors’ and how are they different?

What are good elevator speech examples of ‘what we do’ and ‘who we are’?

Bottom line: Board Members are busy professionals. They lend time, talent and resources to your nonprofit and we can make their engagement meaningful by simple and effective exercises. This activity reminds EVERYONE of the organization's mission and illuminates reasons Board Members committed to be a contributing leader/volunteer.
